Hi everyone,

I've been reading topics on this forum for months and finally have a question that I can't already find an answer to.

This week I purchased my first coal stove (Leisure Line Hyfire) and I'm currently in the process of hooking it up. I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect the 6" stove pipe to the 5" chimney liner. The 6" stove pipe fits nicely inside the thimble and there is roughly a 1/4" gap between the outside of the liner and the inside of the stove pipe. After numerous trips to lowes and online searching I cannot find any sort of adapter for this.

Some things to note, I'm not sure if the chimney liner is a full liner or just a short piece at the thimble. The snow just melted off the roof so I plan on getting up there this weekend and pull the cap off the chimney. House was built in 95 so I can't figure out why there would be a liner in there already? Pictures are worth 1000 words. I'm out of town this week but if it would be helpful I can post pics on Friday.

This site is awesome and thank you in advance for any input.

-Brandon

Check chimney condition--if it looks OK-pull the liner--5" liner??????????????/ never heard that one. UNLESS, they had something weird hooked up. Pellet stove, etc.

There was a large propane heater hooked up when I moved into the house.

Thank you for the links and the smartphone idea. That first connector may be exactly what I need.

If the chimney looks good, I WOULD pull the liner--they tend to deteriorate over time. I know the reducer is a quick fix, but quick is rarely the best!!!

Or pull the 5" and replace with 6".

Or check with the stove manufacturer and get their opinion on constricting the piping, if you have not checked already.

Always a little bit leery of not going by what the manufacturer says is OK.

If manufacturer says "go for it" then there's some piece of mind there.

Whether you go up a size or not, a HVAC supply house should be able to hand you a thimble adapter to fit the thimble to the stovepipe. I always use one, they seem to fit better than stovepipe.

I took your advice and removed to liner. Chimney is in perfect condition.

Thanks again

Yes sir. The six inch stove pipe fits perfectly inside the thimble, so without having to worry about sealing around the liner we are good to go.

If it was for propane heater that 'liner' might have been 'b-vent'...
That is usually only for propane and gas...
