Just fabricate your own out of sheet metal or something, that way you have to manually take it off during heating season, eliminates the worry of it failing and shutting during heating season.

Fail indeed. I think most of those are made for fireplaces that people might light when company shows up, as in, only for cosmetics. I sure wouldn't mess with CO.

Fred's right coal does not heat a chimney anywhere near what a wood stove does. That company told you that because they make money selling you a liner you don't need for coal.
The chimneys in my house were built over 100 years ago for coal use, when the house was owned by the local coal dealer. The center chimney was used with a large coal furnace in the basement. The back chimney had a coal kitchen range on the first floor and a coal hot water heater in the basement hooked up to it. The chimneys are just single wall, locally made red clay brick and no clay liner and they are fine.

Hm... I ordered a chimney inspection (still a ripoff without a camera is $100, with camera nearly $300) to get a third opinion. My gut feeling is the downdraft but then again those brick atop of the chimney easily break off if I touch them. Showing some fatique

Dear folks, can you suggest a fire proof cover to cover my new wooden floor? I mean my stove is on the brick pad but sometimes embers fly off when I rake. I would hate to ruin the new floor but I can't think of a cover and where to get one

Some carpet is non-flammable,it may get burn marks in it,but would keep your new floor safe. The carpet pad can be replaced when it gets too rough looking.

Since the floor gets used (children's toys) for playing, you could get a piece of carpet to roll out while tending the stove, then roll it up & tuck it away between tendings.windyhill4.2 wrote: ↑Fri. 2 things get accomplished.... your wood floor gets protected while tending the stove & you get to enjoy your wood floor when the carpet is rolled up & away .

I'm thinkin the sure fix would be to rake gentler. But the temp piece of fire retardant carpet would be your best bet, roll out, roll up, although I don't know why lil kids would be that close to the stove area??

Hi all, anybody have experience in doing chimney sweeps yourself? I reckon it shouldn't be hard, I really want to clean it right after I am done the heating season so no moisture can be absorbed by the ash in the chimney. Can you recommend where to get that sweeper for an 8" chimney? I should be able to push it down while on the roof while vacuuming at the bottom. Sounds simple enough to me

They sell 8" round, square & rectangle brushes specifically for chimney cleaning at any decent hardware. Make sure you get enough screw together rods to do the full length of chimney.
