Just fill those 2 buckets with coal ash,it will smother the fire just fine . :)

Stick with the sand, heaving a bucket of ash can't end well. :)

For convenient sand purchase look to big blue or big orange box stores, they carry 40 lb. bags of 'Play Sand' for kids sandbox ect.. 8-)

Yes, their manual is online. It even talks about puff backs.

lol that's what my thought was, but since this is only my second season with stoves in general, I wasn't sure if there were acceptable deviations.

They're sending someone out first thing tomorrow morning to fix everything and they're going to talk to their insurance company about the carpet. I plan on staying home from work to "supervise" given that they dropped the ball so spectacularly the first time around.

Is there a guide that shows/explains exactly how the stove should be connected to the chimney? Attachment points, types of fasteners, etc? I'd prefer to know exactly what needs done tomorrow to make everything safe so it's not the blind leading the blind.

That's more like an explosion, than a puff back. We've been using the term "Puff Back" loosely in the coal burning. We've been calling light explosions, Puff Backs. In my opinion, when burning wood, sometimes we'd get a down draft, which would let a puff of smoke into the room. That's what we always called a puff back. Not an explosion, but a puff back. Many "X" wood burners on here. Do you all agree?
