I finished the roof on my outdoor coal storage 'bin'. Last year the bin was roughly 12'x20'x6', this year I doubled the width, and raised the walls another 2'.
So this 'bin' now is roughly the size of a two car garage, 24'x20x8'.

Last year I had a tent top stretched over the bin, with a ridge beam to support the tent.. this didn't hold up well or stay taut enough to get snow to slide off. So I ended up with a sagging tent top dripping water onto the coal despite the cover.. and I had frozen coal. The auger on an AxemanAnderson will not feed if it has a frozen lump of coal near the auger inlet.. so having frozen coal is not a good thing at all.

I haven't figured out my sliding doors for the bin yet,, but soon I'll have some form of weather proofing on the west facing opening..

Six 4x8 sheets stood up would work perfectly for your doors. Add a double track system from TSC and you could open any part of the bin to the loader. Boy,,, that is the "mother of all coal bins" :) Scott

Greg,
That is a property I would dream of owning! You have quite the layout! Our 1/4 of an acre here in MA seems like a postage stamp compared to that.
Good job on your bin Greg!

Stokerscott, thanks, I think I'll drive over to TSC tomorrow and look at the door track kits.

StanT, cool designs! How do you fill the tall one?

Greg...lookin' good! Ohhhh, the things we do to keep our boilers happy. :) The birds are going to love you. I trust your front end loader is 7'11"?

Yes, my small loader is only 7' high,, I have a old Hough loader that will also fit under the trusses..

I have an unloading ramp in front of the building that will take a semi load so I can push it under the roof.

I also have another bin out back to take a semi load and I can transfer it to dry storage during warm weather.

Stan I like the setup of the low one maximizing the usage of the bin by using both sides. Great job.

If I could hook up with a trucking company, I'd haul in rice and nut and retail the stuff, but I'd have to put in a scale, and I'd have to be there to sell it.. I'm gone typically 15-18 days per month, on the road, so I'd have a pretty narrow window for retail sales..
I get PM's all the time about coal retailers.
