Here is my "coal pile", located in my basement. 5.7 tons of rice coal. I debated on whether to build a retaining wall, but in the end I decided that it would just get in the way, plus it would limit how much coal I might store in the future.
This basement room is 7 feet tall and 12 feet wide. The coal pile is about 8 feet across (from wall to the board). The board you see in front is about 3 feet high. You can't see the right edge of the pile, but it doesn't quite reach the other wall. I think if the whole pile was 'square' it would fit in an area 8 wide x 8 deep by 4 high.

Just completed mine but still needs paint. It'll hold 2500lbs and it can be moved with my tractor.

Chris, I like the bin. What are its dimensions, is that 4' cubed or smaller.
Thanks,
Bob

It's actually a weird dimension. 54" long x 48" wide x 46" high. I made it to fit in my trailer so I can take it to the coal dealer to get filled.

The bottom is made with 2x6's layed together with (3) 4x4's holding them in place like a pallet. I can use my tractors forks to lift and move the bin just like moving a pallet. 8)

Since this is our first year and want to get a feel for usage, we are getting it in bags...

I will be building a bin for next year to hold around 3 ton (min. Delivery size). I think that will be enough. I have a corner in the basement approx. 4' x 7.5' and make the wall 4-5' and about 1.5' on hinges to adjust it down when it gets low.

I just use my basement as my coal bin. I considered builing a wall at one time. I may build one if I want to store more coal. This is the first year I have burned coal.

Here are a couple of pics of my coal bin I finished in Oct. 06.
The dementions are 7'wide x10'long x6'high. Because this is an old house with a dirt floor cellar, I poured a 4" concrete floor for the bin. The walls are constucted from origanal 2x4's (recycled from a remodling prodject) and 1/2"O.S.B. There is curently 5 tons of rice coal in the bin.

Just Finished building by Bin. It was probably a bad day to do it because we had water in the basement from HEAVY downpours all night. Regardless, it is finished. All I need is some coal!

Here is my outdoor coal bin. The doorway on the right edge of the photo is the doorway into my boiler's building.

The concrete blocks are about 3000 pounds each, very sturdy. The bin took a few hours to stack.

I have tarps covering the coal to keep rain and snow off the coal.

Each side contains 4.5 tons of coal, the left side is Anthracite, Bituminous on the right.
