Hello All.
I have a very old Efm furnace. I would say around the 1950s. I have have been running it for four seasons. This season I am getting lots of CO and am concerned and have shut it down.
I do not have any idea on who to call to service it. I live in Allentown Pa. I get my coal from dries in Emmaus he could not recommend anyone. I do not have much trust in someone coming out to look at it without telling me immediately to replace it. I have checked the chimney and flue for blockage everything is clear. It drafted good last year. Maybe the Damper is shot but wouldn't it still draft after heating completely up? I get CO at the start up of the timer and when the TSTAT calls for heat.
Could the Combustion chamber be cracked? It did getting very hot on start up this year. I had a huge flame from the blower being turned up to high.
I can not afford a costly service call only to be told its old and needs replacing this I already know.

It is possible that the heat exchanger is shot, but it could just as easily be something simple. A good cleaning and inspection is where I would start. You also need to make sure that the stoker is working correctly, and not plugged with fines. If you aren't sure what to check, it would really be best to get someone in look at it.

The only way to be sure is to use an inspection camera
to look at the welds and or your plumber will use a
smoke generator to check the EFM heat exchangers
integrity.
Your furnace is sixty years old(or so you think) and it has gone
through sixty plus heating seasons and you may just need
a new furnace.
A digital hand held Carbon Monoxide detector/sniffer
will tell the plumber quickly where the leak is if he does not
use a small smoke bomb/smoke generator.
Please do not think that a "good plumber" that installs and handles
maintenance of EFM products will be out to screw you over as thier
plumbing license is always at stake when making decisions.

THanks Gentlemen
THought it was the fines but nope so now its on to the heat exchanger cleaning.
I was told to open up the sides to check the heat exchanger to brush and clean it. It may be blocked. Has anyone done this is there a service manual available. Or youtube videos of someone who has done it.

They have thier boiler and furnace manuals on line. If you cannot find your model you can call them and probably have a copy for the cost of printing and postage.
