Was looking at my basement trying to figure out exactly where I want to locate my boiler. The spot I have picked out would be strategically close to where I want to build the storage bin. The downside is there would be about 6' of horizontal run above where the bin will be but I will be using a power vent so should this be a major concern....general rule of thumb??

Shouldn't be. Just keep a slight angle to it--maybe a T half way.

How much chimney do you have? A 40+ footer will have no trouble, a 15 footer and it could be a problem.

That would be fine as long as you shut down and clean that pipe regularly
Just make it easy to clean the fly ash that will settle there, use a T with a cap instead of a 90. I have about a 3' horizontal running to the thimble and access it through my baro that is on the end of a T. Never shut down to clean it I just do it on a day when it is idling a lot, shop vac wand goes in and 30 seconds later it is clean.

Just make sure as it gets longer you give it more pitch up to the thimble. More is better.

As of now I will be using my beloved (exaggeration) power vent. I will be using up all my savings then some with this project. I know a chimney is the best way to go and I will install one but I can only do what I can afford at this time. When I do get a chimney up it will be about 40' and life will be good!coaledsweat wrote:How much chimney do you have? A 40+ footer will have no trouble, a 15 footer and it could be a problem.

Hey, do what you can, when you can. Many of us install in stages. The important thing is you install things correctly and avoid troubles and having to reinstall laterswyman wrote:As of now I will be using my beloved (exaggeration) power vent. I have about 3-1/2 ft of horizontal run with no slope. It has not caused me issues. But the AHS (and the AA's) utilizes a cyclonic separator to send exhaust particulates that would otherwise go into the flue into the ash tub instead.

When I got started in this, I bought an old hand fired wood/coal boiler from a guy in Bridgeport CT. His father installed it in the early '70s. It had a 20' horizontal run and about 50' of chimney. It had plenty of draft.
