Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Keystoker Koker
Coal Size/Type: rice

Post by svanlare » Mon. Feb. 15, 2016 3:51 pm

I cleaned it checked it went thru it I have no idea whats next.I called a service guy he suggested that the air being pulled in is to cold (its in the basement) and freezing the last few days. The cold air is cooling the box to fast and only allowing the fan to run for about 15 seconds. I have the fan limit switch at about 110 up to 200. Is this possible and how can I fix it.

Welcome to the coal board. We're gonna need some more specifics. This is a Stoker warm air furnace, correct? Does it have a dedicated cold air return from the area that is being heated? How cold is it on the basement floor?

Welcome to our coal board. :D

Do you really want to be heating the freezing basement?
Is your Koker a 160 model?
Is your cold air return off the basement floor or did you duct it into the house duct system?

Give us an idea of your total square feet that you're trying to heat.
And how old is your house for an idea on insulation and construction type.

I am pulling from the motor directly the guy I bought it from said I wouldn't need a cold air return. The basement floor couldn't have been above forty at its best. I had to put it in my basement as its my only source of heat and it was to keep pipes from freezing as I switched from wood and it is the 160. insulation isnt good and its a home built in the 1890's two story a little under 1500 sq ft.

To heat the basement then you must make some significant changes to seal up basement and to improve your duct system.

like they said, ductwork is important. pulling cooler air from the basement floor only cools the warmer air more.

whats the setting on your temp. switch for the blower?, might raise it up to keep the blower on longer.

post a couple pics of your setup

do you have it adjusted properly for full burn when calling for heat?

I have the furnace duct work ran into the original duct work so I am really only getting the residual heat from the stove. would a cold air return help the blower motor run longer as it would be moving warmer air and not cooling down the box as fast. I am trying to get the basement fully insulated soon. Hoping to have it spray foamed. I will try to get some pictures I think I am getting a good burn the fire looks good and I have a little less than 2 inches or so of ash at the end of the plate.

it could be back feeding into your cold air return in your original duct work. are you ducting it into the cold air return or hot air ducts to your system?

Its only in the hot air duct and the cold air ducts the used to be hooked up to the fuel oil furnace or just there on the other side of the basement. I removed the fuel oil all together and capped off the hot air duct work that went to it.

What do you guys think about me running two 12 inch insulated flex duct lines down to the sides of the blower is that going to be enough air flow or to much. it will run less than ten feet and be coming from the middle of the house first floor

2-12" will not be too much. The bigger the better it will work for you. :)

I second the addition of return ducts, you need to have a closed system to heat the living area's space efficiently. Also, turn your convection "fan off" temperature (I believe it is the 110 you mentioned above) down to 80 or 90. This will keep the convection fan running longer. I have mine set to about 80, and my fan runs constantly during the winter.
