What is the problem with the exhaust flapper? Is there a lip that holds coal? If so grind it off.

If it doesn't close when the drum is empty, you can drill a hole in the lever and add a nut bolt and washers to add some counterweight.

I feel like I need to glue a piece of rubber to it to make it seal right. Plus I would have to add the counterweight, etc.. I think it will be easier to just buy a 45 degree angle and use the rubber flapper I have currently. Plus I'd like my coal to fall closer to the front, which that 45 would allow.

The 45* sounds like the best option on your setup. I was fortunate to have enough ceiling height to fit a 55 gallon drum above the hopper and ran a 2" pipe at a 45* to get the coal where I wanted it.

For whatever reasons, I have great results with one 6-1/2 hp vac and no flapper.... :D

Pictures of the peanut can lid flapper. I trimmed some of the edge off. I did not use any rubber to make an air tight seal. 12.5 hp of vacuum sucks her in tight!

DS...I am interested to see how you have the lid fastened to the pipe...looks like a piece of copper wire? I know its at a tough spot but is it possible to get a pic of that?

Sure. I believe it is just a piece of solid 12 gauge scrap wire I had. :D That style lid provided enough of a lip/surface area get the geometry needed to create the hinge motion. Then I had to trim the one edge to prevent coal from hanging up. Any coal left on the mating surface of the lid prevent flap closure and negated vacuum. Hope this helps.

Good pic, I figured it was something like that.

I like the #12 copper wire solution....that's how my chimney cap is being held on now since the lock ring on it rusted off! :D
