so I've got Mr. Herald all buckled down for the off season. I've vacuumed him out, oiled him in certain places, cleaned up the mica. Even have the small light bulb burning inside.

Problem is this giant whole in the wall.

I wet vacuumed it out. Thick, black, wet, sooty substance. (It had been raining for days before though.) There was also some in the flue pipe, but it wasn't wet. Just an ashy black powdery substance. (Is that what creosote looks like?) Anyway, there has to be like a black stove pipe cap or something that can go on that whole right?

Cap the pipes ... and I don't see any hole (hehehe) .. clean out and put a picture up to cover (you will want access to this hole later right?)

Maybe a picture of the hole ?

Sweet looking stove !

They make decorative caps for the inside. Should consider a cap for the outside to prevent rain from coming in.

Fly ash is typically a light grey or darker if it's damp, similar in color to portland cement. There is no creosote, that's from wood if you are burning wood.

You guy are hilarious. "Picture of the whole. Over the whole" :rimshot: Of course I'll want to access it later. Say November when I light up the stove for the winter. It's just the off season and I figure with everyone shutting their stoves down & disconnecting their flue pipes to prevent the stove from rusting. There'd be some type of universal thing that everyone did for this. Keep in mind this was my fist season with the stove. Still learning.

Figured they'd make something surely I'm not the first to have this issue. I do have a chimney cap on the chimney, but it rained so hard & for so many days I'm not surprised that it was wet in the clean out trap.. Yes it was a dark color. I did start the season off with wood & ended it with wood. But for the most part. Nothing but coal. Thanks Richard

Leave the stove hooked up and stuff some newspaper in the pipe above the stove to keep moisture out. That's what I do

I "over stuff" a plastic bag with insulation. Tie the bag up tight, and stuff it in the hole.
I then put my pipe back loose, just for looks. In the fall I tip the pipe and take out the bag of insulation and screw the pipe together.

If'n ya change one letter in the word 'whole' and list a price we could talk :nana: toothy

Other than that looks like a good place for a basketball tournament........unless your into pinging, then a 22 caliber rifle with a swinging target, or maybe even rig up some bunnies moving across the opening and a BB gun on hand

God I love NEPA Crossroads

That's a great idea! If you want to save a few dollars, instead of taking a picture of the whole hole ............ Maybe just hang the frame over the real hole .

I'm thinking , the glass will prevent the occasional bird or bat from terrorizing the family and keep them, confined to the chimney kind of like a real mini zoo.

And as an added bonus ..... the whole hole would appear to be 3D.

As much as it would be fun having gunfire in the living room, ...... I think the wife would prefer that you install a picture hook, screwed to the cover, and hang a picture frame, wreath, flower arrangement, or decorative plate on it.
