I use a ONEIDA Dust Deputy in my furniture shop to collect sanding dust. It does an excellent job of depositing the fine dust into the 5 gallon bucket and not in the vacuum. This allows easier disposal and the fine dust never makes it to the filter and won't clog the filter. I have been using a Jet Air Purifier near the stove to catch the fine dust but it's not 100%, I still get a layer of dust on the floor.
Today I rigged up my dust deputy, vacuum and the air filter all in the same area. At first shake down and ash removal it seems to do an excellent job of dust pick up. So for the rest of the season I'll continue the experiment. If it is successful next season it will all be contained in a cabinet. The hoses in the photo have wood dust from the shop on them and not coal dust. I need to take the garden hose to them! LOL!
Stay tuned.

Good idea with the Dust Deputy. I've been meaning to get one or make my own. For me this would come in the handiest when I clean the system at the end of the season. I have a Delta Air purifier but it is semi-permanently mounted to the basement ceiling. I do turn it on when I'm making a lot of dust, be it from woodworking or stove related.

Did a good shake down and poker job this morning plus ash removal and this set up seems to be working as I had hoped. I picked up a new filter for the vacuum today since it had been used in the wood shop for some time.

I've had this setup for two years now. I can clean out 7 or 8 tons worth of fly ash buildup and not see any dust in the vacuum bag. Before setting this up, I would have to change the filter and bag after can single clean out. I use it to cleanup ash and coal dust from around the boiler several times a week as well as connect it to my saw to collect sawdust. The dust on the outside is caused by static. It's been a good purchase.

I have the Rockler Dust Right Vacuum canister/separator with my shop vac, works very similar for the ash cleanup.
I also built a dust collector cyclone for my workshop that works good too for my sawdust.

I have the dust deputy also, but I still get fine dust coming through to the vacuum. I always attributed it to the dust being too light to settle out in the deputy.

Rob, I think you probably have a small leak in your collection tank. That will cause small amounts of dust to get into the vacuum. It must be 100% airtight.WNYRob wrote:I have the dust deputy also, but I still get fine dust coming through to the vacuum. I have used the Dust Deputy in my commercial furniture shop for years on the sanding bench. I would guestimate 99% of the fine sanding dust stays in the collection tank.

My Dust Deputy is now back in my wood shop. A nice collection of dust in the collection pail and the vacuum filter was clean. Looks like next season is going to get it's own Dust Deputy and vacuum.

We need some more detailed pictures of peoples set-ups from different angles.

you can always get a inexpensive one from Harbor Freight and with a few mod's it can work much better. A cyclone separator or simliar drum keeps much of the stuff from the bags/filter. I upgraded to a dual bag I bought from my neighbor, and added a knockout canister, works great. using my orginal setup for my new CNC router. just need to hook it up.
