Hand Fed Coal Stove: chubby

Post by seabee » Tue. Feb. 10, 2015 6:48 am

Hello All,
I will be purchasing a chubby stove this spring to replace my wood burner.
I have a ss insulated roof liner , I was told it was 314 stainless and I would need a 312 ss to replace it.
I REALLY don't want to do that. Question is can I use this or do I need to line it ?
Corrosion of the pipe was the issue.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Welcome to the forum SB. You have asked a question that really can't be answered the way it is worded. When you say a roof liner are you talking about a SS liner that goes all the way down inside a brick or masonry chimney? Or are you asking about something else. Do you have an existing chimney and if so what type? Can you give us some pics?

Oh and get ready for some lively debate regarding liners. It's a hot topic on the forum....pun intended.

Standby others will chime in.

Dear bimano7,
I have a cathedral ceiling and this liner goes thru the roof to prevent the stove pipe from touching any part of the roof structor.
As for pictures ill have to wait for my son to take them to post, Im an old timer who still owns a kodak.

Who told you this?... a stove shop or inspector, (fire chief or insurance carrier etc.) What type of pipe is above the roof thimble? I am assuming that is the same 314 ss and would need replacing as well? just playing devil's advocate ;)

The stove and coal supplier, Its all314 ss two feet inside to the pipe cap its all one unit.
Its all been approved by fire codes and my insurance carrier.
The stove supplier said the smoke would corrode the the 314ss and I would have to replace it with 312ss.

just seeing if there is any basis in fact with this.

Bet you have a 304 SS, and he wants to sell you a 316 SS. You can Google the difference.

Just burn some wood in early fall and again in early spring and all will be good...creosote will lay a protective layer for the off season. This is a little know secret. ;)
