Stoker Coal Boiler: Van Wert VA600

i am deciding between using the tote system or the bulk bag system for feeding my Van Wert when the time comes. Leaning towards totes as I have the room. If you are using the tote system, can you post pics/details of how you are feeding your stoker and how are you getting the totes filled with coal?? are you bringing them to the breaker yourself or getting a delivery at home and using the chute to fill them?

I am pretty close to tamaqua and also jeddo ... has anyone filled totes at either location? I would prefer to pick up my own coal and use the savings to buy another ton vs. delivery.

Thanks

Brad

thanks McGiever .. I have seen yours in that thread ... looks good. what is the black rubber piece surrounding the auger tube? when you install the tote, do you just push the tote towards the boiler while holding the tube in the right spot?

The black is slippery poly buta-something and is split w/ 2 pieces, 1 piece does a good overlap on the other and both pieces are held w/ self drilling screws into IBC metal frame.
IBC is parked first up to auger's position with gate still closed, the black plastic is screwed on over auger into IBC frame and then gate is pulled to flood the end of the auger w/ coal. :)

As for delivery or pickup yourself, I have done both.
The pickup yourself option requires machinery or some means to load IBC on and/or off the trailer at house and at breaker when IBC's are full.
The delivery option requires that delivery truck can raise/elevate the loaded dump bed high enough to get easy gravity flow down to the height of the IBC.

my thoughts initially were to load 2,3,or 4 of the ibc totes onto a heavy duty equipment trailer I have access to. if the coal could be loaded into the totes while on the trailer, when I get home, I have access to a pallet lift that can lift high enough to take off the trailer and into the garage. either that or do one at a time in the back of my f250. how would it be possible to load the totes at the breaker ?? I guess it would only work with the whole top cut open and something like a bob cat sized bucket ... or I would have to build a large plywood funnel of some sort ...

i think I remember reading that jeddo only loads with a large front end loader .. but somewhere else in tamaqua uses a skid steer on the weekends ??

No funnel affair needed for wider loader bucket if you can fill two or three IBC at once,,,just lay a folded old tarp or even a bed sheet at the junction and no coal will fall between them. :)

About totes.
Thought about the same idea.
Eventually I ended up with an idea of using blue plastic drums (50gallon each).
Firstly, going to build a engine hoist on wheels with 2 winches on it.
One hook for lifting drum up, another hook is going to a side close to the bottom of the drum. For turning it upside down directly into the hooper.
Easy, peasy

I cut the tops out of mine to fill them, and set one on top of other on a frame work and cinderblock , holes in bottom of top one feeding the bottom one , and a gate setup and chute to fill 5 gal buckets to dump in small chute/bin mounted on back of house all as shown in pic , put stain on totes to keep uv rays off plastic as much as possible
