Couldn't tell you how many times I've seen that. Usually the horizontal pipe is at least five feet long. The funny part is... 9 out of 10 times It's supported by the window unit (air conditioner) on top of a 55gal drum. Don't want to carry it to far away :P

Pretty sad Dougie boy, I have a neighbor who showed me his rocket stove  a 5 gal bucket with 4 inch pipe surrounded with sand and he said he was going to pull out a window sash and do the same thing with his chimney, and I just shook his hand and said "hope to see yah come spring!

Desperate people do desperate things!

I don't think it's gas.... it looks sooty.

PS.... I've done the same thing in the past, but used sheet metal to cover the window hole, not plywood.

Probably a wood stove right on the other side of that window (that used to be there).. I had a set up like that for my garage with a 55 gallon drum barrel stove. Worked great to warm up the garage for band practice. Burned wood and garbage in it ... Oh that's right, they ain't smuch different..

ya... im not sure what they are burning on the other end of that pipe, but I think its wood (just a guess).... its a recent install though (or at least re-install) because I drive by it every day... that photo is taken from inside my truck on the street (building inspector's always worries about hurricane clips & nail block plates... yet this is somehow dandy  )

wouldn't be surprised if that photo was taken in NY. After all, once ya pay property taxes, what's left?

That's how my neighbor vented his pellet stove through a 6-over-6 window. He replaced a pane with sheet metal and ran the exhaust pipe out. Left the rest of the window intact so he would still get light.

Looks like he's got a lil bit of land there. Also looks like he did it safely & I'd bet that height works for whatever he's got in there. Ya know, joinin NEPA X-roads don't make us EXPERTS on everything pertaining to running a stove. I also know it's real easy to be critical-- Damn, time for barn chores :)

Maybe his central heating system failed and he couldn't afford to replace it and he's making due with what he has. There really is always more to a story. ;)
