I don't know what is optimum for your stove, but most have their baro set so that it starts to open as it climbs above a 0.02 on the mano. Hopefully someone will chime in with more information.

Right now, we have about 40 mph gusts and my chimney (17' steel) always has a good draft regardless of wind speed. My damper is just swinging away while quite often being pegged wide open for a few seconds at a time. Kokers like a draft of about .025 and the damper is keeping mine between about .02 and .035. While my firebox was burning about 300 degrees, my flue temp was about 110, most of the air in my chimney was being drawn through the damper and not through the stove's firebox. To me, this is an example of a properly functioning damper.

I was interested to see how my direct vent koker would handle this wind and so far its been very steady on the magnehelic at right about .02 with almost no variance. This is my first year for coal so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Don't worry about the brief fluctuations in gusty winds. The baro is a mechanical device and does not respond instantaneously.

Also, the baro calibration marks are just a rough reference, not a precise setting. Adjust the baro to give the desired manometer reading, since the manometer IS more of a precision device. If your target is .05, and the manometer says .05, then you are good regardless of which mark the baro weight is at.

If there is a BIG discrepancy between the baro setting and the manometer reading, then you might have other issues such as a deficient or too-efficient chimney, improperly placed baro, improperly place manometer, etc. etc. If so it's probably best to address that in a new thread.

With that setting it would be normal for the baro damper to be steadily closed if your manometer is steadily reading something less than 0.06". Now if it is set at 6 and it's not moving because it's stuck wide open, and your manometer is reading less than 0.06" that would be a major concern.
