I cant imagine much smaller than the 2" I put on. I think it's a 5/8 shaft dia.

BTW, where did you get that very nice looking auger? How long is it?

I ordered it from Tractor Supply. It was 16' long, but I shortened it 3'. The setup seems well built except for the motor mounting. That could be better but it does work well. I also got the motor at Tractor Supply. Picked up coal today, 5 ton going in the new bin in the morning. a toast to the skid steers of the world.

Some advice for anyone using a grain auger. Before you install it, give a good coating of rust inhibiting paint. After one year, mine had a lot of corrosion on it. I just spent a day cleaning it up and coating it with rusty metal primer. Here it is with new stainless steel hardware. The galvanized bolts were pretty rough also.

Ouch, Thanks I did not do that. I will get a SS tube, but it wont go in until next year. Wish I had read that before I put coal on it yesterday.

How hard is it to shorten one. is welding involved?

A little bit of welding was necessary. Just on the auger itself. Welded the end that makes the initial contact with the coal. They auger is only welded every foot and a half or so. Where I cut, left the end a little loose. Just didn't want issues after burying it. Cutting it was easy. I used a saws-all.

So how did the Tractor supply auger work this winter for you? What size pulley did you end up using 2"?

Thanks
james

Sorry for delay, Yes worked great. No issues with auger. Going through more coal than I put in the bin was the only issue, lol

George do you start and stop your auger under full load? If so is there any issue with doing that?

Thanks
James

Yes, that's how I was using it. Wired to a light switch. I would turn it on til barrel was full and turn off switch. Coal is always throughout the tube and auger. It stuck a couple times when turning it on, but just turned switch off then on again and it was fine. I am happy with the investment for sure.
