Just picked up a new Watts M1 prv for my boiler and in reading the yellow tag that is attached noticed that it is not to be used on coal or wood fired boilers having an uncontrolled BTU heat output. What PRV should be used for wood and coal units? 30# is 30# right?

I don't know what one you need to use for coal.
30 #'s at a big enough capacity to handle the volume of a run away solid fuel boiler.
But one rated to at least 500,000 bth/hr might ought to work.
I smell a liability lawyer.

Do you have uncontrolled BTU output?

No doubt legal mumbo jumbo.
Someone had a problem somewhere and blamed the relief valve.
Hand fired equipment can be easily overfired.
Just make sure the relief valve has 2 to 3 times the max rated capacity of the hand fired equipment. That is usually not a problem with residential equipment.

Thanks, I thought it was alot of BS. Iwas in the supply house today and asked about the disclaimer and the guts pulled some other sizes off the shelf and all had the same thing on them. Maybe they want a the valves with the weights hanging on a chain. More weight , more pressure! or just wire it closed...LOL
