I have an open stairway from the basement to the top floor(no doors).am I over thinking this or should I just play with it?

First, welcome.
DO some reading (and searching) on here, It been talked about many times. But you need to do BOTH, move the hot air up and bring the cold air down.

If you can allow the hot air to move up naturally, that will be the best. Just providing a path for the cold air to return will increase the effectiveness. I don't like to use fans unless absolutely necessary.
