For anyone interested, here's an update on the ash vacuum I built. (see Homemade Ash Vacuum System )
I'm using it for the second year and it works great. I've attached a short video of it in operation and a couple of photos taken when I opened it up after the first season.

That was about a 4'x4' box wasn't it? So the ash that's in there is ash from how much coal? That is a real cool system Len!

Thanks.
I burned 3 3/4 tons of coal last year. I'm guessing the ash from 2 1/2 tons of it went through the vacuum.
The box is a 4' cube made of 5/8" plywood and 2X2 framing and bracing and sits on a pallet.
I'm expecting I can get 3 years out if it. We'll see.
The leaf blower has been protected from the elements and seems to be holding up well.

I can't seem to get the video loaded. I really wanted to watch it. But, the pics are quite impressive.

IOF, me neither via silverlite. I right clicked on the file extension and 'save target as' to download on my pc. It played in WMP 11.I'm On Fire wrote:I can't seem to get the video loaded. I really wanted to watch it. But, the pics are quite impressive.

Now I know how the Griswold family felt waiting for the christmas lights to light up, and no drum roll. I really wanted to see the dust clowd

brilliant idea, but a thought I had.
way back then, one of my chores was to clean the house, I used the vacuum cleaner to suck up ashes from the wood stove.... the vacuum cleaner caught on fire. I guess there was a hot ash on the ash spill plate and it lit the stuff in the vacuum bag on fire with the help of a "STRONG" motor induced draft. ;-( now I know...

Sorry for the problems opening the short video. I'm not much of a computer expert.
I double clicked on "coal vacuum operating.wmv" and saved it to my desktop and double clicked on it there to watch it. There's not a lot to see. The ash cloud turned out to be nothing much. The Reading coal made a much larger cloud than my Blaschak does.

Nah, you don't want to do that again I'd link this youtube video but it's too much of a advertisement. Cut and paste it if you want.natalie wrote:brilliant idea, but a thought I had.

https://youtu.be/2CP_o1boSAA I do use one and don't mind in the least recommending one. I use it mainly for the small ash spills around the stove an hearth. I'm on my second set of bags and it does a better than decent job for the small stuff or a wood fed fire place. Len's design is for a much larger job with no real mess inside.
