I hauled 3800 lbs of rice from Easton Pa to Neshanic NJ about 35 miles in a GMC 3500 Crew Cab 4X4 long bed also know as the SS Neshanic. I used 65lbs air in the 265RX16 and the truck sat nice , rode fine, but did take diminished braking andunexpected hills and curves into consideration. I also used a tarp with about ten tight bungies since the load was over the gunwalls. With the bungies over the tarp nice and tight the load did not start to spill or shift.

I paid 180.00 a ton over 245.00 a ton delivered so I figure it was about 120.00 cheaper minus about 20.00 for gas. Plus I like the people at the Black diamond coal better than the Oil Dealer 2 miles from my house who acts like hes doing you a favor selling you coal. He wants 245 a ton with aminimum of 2 tons delivered . If I want to picjk it up its an extra 25.00 loading fee, go figure.

For what it is worth,four days ago the D.O.T. officers set up a processing station right along the main road near my home. In addition to their normal targets,much to my surprise they were stopping all and every pickup. I had never seen anything like that before in Penna.The pickups with absolutely empty beds were sent on their way. Anyone with ANYTHING in that bed was put on their portable scale and they asked for all cards etc. If I were hauling coal I still would have been o.k. since I use the trailer and never overload, but I just do not like to be so close to very serious people that are all carrying. Remember also that New York state requires a DOT# on any vehicle or combination vehicle/trailer that has a GVWR over 10,000 lbs. You can't win, some guys register their trucks as 6800# gvwr and their trailer as 2900# (what I do) which is legal unless you actually weigh over 10k then your really screwed so be careful.
Burning coal is definitely worth the extra work involved.

Glad this topic came around again. I met with coalberner about a month ago and got a pickup track load of coal that turned out to be alittle more than 2 tons. The rice coal just packs better than other sizes.

I run close to 3000 # in our 3/4 ton truck from time to time with E rated tires and the weight toward the front of the box. I drive a little slower and plan ahead a bit in the braking department. Tried 4000# of coal once in 2 bins for a short trip, but I don't recommend it.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion, the rice is always more volume than the larger sizes. You might be able to achieve that after a long trip where the vibration of the road has packed it down but when it initially goes in the truck it should be higher.

The first and only time so far I picked up coal with my truck. LOL, 1 pallet didn't sound all that heavy. :shock: well, the slip said 2400lbs... OUCH! Poor truck took an ass whipping for 44 miles. I have a trailer lined up for next load.

Ck out that mountain of Blaschak, both bulk and bagged.

Side note, my cell is a better camera than a cell phone.

K9 your truck looks fine. I put a skid in my Ford Explorer with no problem, wouldn't want to do it again, but it was no problem for the first couple of times I did it toothy

I put a full ton in my 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan. It hauled it without breaking. I wouldn't do it every day.

I took it off the skid, figured the wood would make the load too heavy.

Did you check the owners manual? Personally pushing it beyond what Ford says you can do is asking for trouble. I would ask around for somebody with a trailer that has sides on it.

K9, Nice truck. It looks like it is squatting a bit.LOL.I sure wouldn't hesitate more trips with a truck like that. Then again I don't drive anything that nice. :oops: Guess I better stick with my beater, year round rat,disposable, 200,000 mile+ '93 Caravan. :oops:

I have a Chevy K2500 diesel and load 1 ton into it. I drive 30 miles and wont go over 50MPH. I like to play it a bit conservative than push things and blow a tire or something.
