The End Is Near! ... Hehe

The past 3 mornings I have fired my Harman shortly after waking up, with just a little bit of pea coal, just to get this old house warmed up. The low tonight is supposed to be 39 and 34 tomorrow night, so I probably will be burning some more coal. The weather was wonderful today, we did lots of work outside. Before long the coal stove will be replaced by the air conditioner. If I could only figure out a way to run my a/c on coal.....

It has been in the high 30's to low 40's the last few nights, I sure hate burning the propane to take the chill off the house, but I suppose it is less than keeping the stoker boiler warm.

I've got my boiler aquastat set at 140. Just idling along to take the chill of when needed and heating the domestic hot water. Burning about 25 lbs a day. I tend the boiler every 3-4 days. Ash bucket is usually about half full and the coal hopper still 2/3 full. I'll continue operation until I run out of coal. Guessing about 500 lbs left. Then I shut it down for service and upgrades. I'll put it back to heating domestic hot water in June after I get some of the good NEPA coal "coal berner" keeps talking about.

yep and it is the only stuff worth burning you will see when you pick some up and what day are you coming up fri or sat pm me oh yes and I still have the most deep mines in my county 12 see ya

I think this weekend will be it!! It was in the 80's and only getting down in the 40-50's. I have about 20-30#'s in it and it should be gone by the weekend!!

Then time to clean it up and get it ready for next year. (maybe in the garage this time, have a different stove waiting to be hooked up in place of it.

Then it was 32 last night....can't win.

I shut down this past friday because of 80f to 85f in the day at night 50tis to 60tis the weekend comes and back in the 50tis to 60tis in the day and 34f to 38f at night can't win ether nutty weather now it is going back up in the 70tis to 80tis I give up

Well, the fire on my boiler finally went out last night. For the last three plus weeks it's been heating domestic hot water only. I burned a total of 11,450 pounds of pea coal since October 28, 2006. That's 458 twenty five pound coal scuttles full! I weigh each scuttle load so the total is fairly accurate. The scuttle is the same one I used as a kid 50 years ago to carry ashes out of our basement. Sounds like a Guinness World Record to me! I'm estimating 20 lbs a day of coal usage for heating domestic hot water only.

Greg L, can you tell us more about this timer you installed. Did you get it from Grainger or a stove dealer? Where in/on the stove is it installed?

The timer is called a 'repeat cycle timer' Greenhouses use similar products to time the uses of sprinklers and lights.

It is a fully electric control. One I use is from a company called MacroMatic. This one is available in various forms of parts of a second, parts of a minute, parts of an hour, etc. or a 'universal' one that can be set for just about any time interval.

The other is fromSyrelec of Dallas Tx. it is made by or imported from Crouzet. It it a TDR2U. I can be set from 1%-99% of a minute, hour, 10hours, 1 day, or 7 days. I'm going from memory, but it can be set just about any way you want.

do a google search for 'repeat cycle timer' and on the above parts, I think you will find enough info to answer your questions

The chill in the air (current temp.: 55) reminds me---will be burning the Harman before you know it. I did gaze fondly at the stove today. But it's supposed to be over 90 degrees on Saturday......

That is what is our our Keystoker. it is set for 1.5 Mins every 10 Mins to keep the coal moving on idle mode. it is 30 min. timer with pins to change the settings. 1 Pin = 15 Seconds approx.

My wife thinks I'm nuts because I'm excited that the coal man is delivering next week! I can't wait!

I was also getting jazzed because I've worked all summer long to partially clear a wooded lot adjacent to my home. What I did is remove about 50% of the trees (though when I’m done, it'll be up to 70%). Of the remaining trees, I used a pruning staff/saw to remove all branches up to about 20 feet off the ground. It looks good! But as I stand on the back deck.....I can catch a single leaf letting go every now and then. It's not 'autumn' leaves per say......but they sure as hell weren’t letting go a month ago!
As much as I like spring......and burning the rock in winter.....my FAVORITE season is fall. Late fall to be exact. Leaves have already fallen.......dusk settles in at 4:30pm......it's overcast and there is a light cold mist falling. Oooooooooooh - I like it!
