Hi Everyone,

Quik question, I am lookng to purchase another Coal Stove for my house
I have the fireplace in my finished basement with the insert in it now burning coal, looking to put new stove on first floor on same wall as chimney going through the wall with the stove pipe and tapping into the existing chimney.

The masonary chimney has a clay liner in it now, before I go out and spend the money on new stove need some input on this if it can be done

(I think the chimney is 12"x12") have to get on roof and measure to make sure

Tony

yes it can be done, and the flue will handle the volume of exhaust gasses produced being a 12/12. bear in mind code does not like that installation and the code nazi's may be along shortly to tell you not to do it. however, once again the main concern when codes were written preventing 2 appliances in the same flue different levels burning solid fuel; was directed primarily at wood burning. if a chimney fire should occur from creosote buildup, the chimney would not easily be able to shut down combustion air. the second concern was that should you have a chimney with a poor draft, gasses could be produced by one stove, and exit into the house through the higher one. this is very unlikely however, and as long as you have decent stack height above the second appliance, and/or an interior chimney it will basically never happen. I would make sure to have a decent co detector in the vicinity of the second (higher) stove, but I wouldn't worry much about it, and if I were in your situation, I would probably do it in a heartbeat.

btw, if you're going through a combustable wall to acess the chimney make sure that combustables are not even close to the wall pass-through. at least 18" filled w/ fiberglass insulation. you don't want a fire to start behind a wall.

Hi Berlin,

Thank you for the input, I wasn't really sure if it could be done, and I really don't want to get a direct vent stove (don't want another pipe sticking out of the house)

I am going to double check on the size of the flu over the weekend and then start looking for a stove, we will most likely take a ride to Pa. to look for a stove

Again thanks for the information

Tony

The house I Live in was once a set of half doubles very common in the coal region, it has one Chimney about 8X8 back in the day there where 4 stoves connected to it, 2 coal burning kitchen stoves and upstairs 2 Heatrolas the placed never burned down and no one ever died of Co2 . Now it shares just a natural Gas Furnace and an upstairs Coal Stove never a problem if anything the occasional running of the furnace always assures a nice warm flue to keep the draft healthy
