How Big Do You Make a Coal Bin?

I use nut coal, how big of a bin outside would I need, wide, high, long? I am putting the coal on the ground. Please reply thank-you, jes

That all depends on how much coal you want it to hold? One ton of coal is about 40 cubic feet.

I am putting 10 ton of coal in it, I was hoping to make it
10' wide, 12' long, 8' high.

That should hold about 24 ton.

ya 40cu ft per ton. but if you buy your coal from the same guy I did last year, you can make your bin about 15% smaller

Make sure its big enough for one full season... so you can stock up for the winter. You might not be able to get back to your coal bin with 2 feet of snow on the ground.

I have two coal bins. They are built on top of skids and are outside (sorry no pics yey) Both hold about 1000 pounds. This is good since I pick up my coal in a Ford Ranger and 1000 pounds is about all it will hold. I also put a lid on hinges on them to keep the rain,snow and sunlight out (light makes coal weak and not as efficient - at least thats how it seems). Made both out of big shipping crates with plenty of cross members - 1000 pounds is a lot of weight.

FINALLY, getting around to building my bin in the basement. Today, I was just working on it in the basement and studded/framed in an area of approx. 4' x 12' x 6' high about 4 feet from the window. Should be enough for at least 4 ton. My supplier has a chute about 14' long, the driveway is about 3 feet from the window. Should work great.!! Pics to follow.

Here's a couple pics, just have to finish up the end to the right, about 4'x4' section and put the removable slats for the door, add a light.
The window to load it is to the right, about 4' from the bin right next to the driveway. Just need to line it with plastic.

Got a couple more pics of it 99% complete. With removable slats. I had some old metal edged shelves, worked great!

I actually made 2 bins, the back one is 4'x8' x 5'+ and the front one (standing in, is 4' x 4' x 4'. Should be enough for 3-4+ tons, you can see my window is driectly to the side and the driveway is 3' from the window. Should be enough room to angle it thru.!!
