Saw one at an antique store, didn't want much for it, very similar.

Does anyone still make a sifter for coal, it would be nice this time of year. I have alot of unburned coal and thought of making one of my own.

I wasted a lot of coal last winter (last winter? Is it over already?), I have a pile of half burned coal out there. I think it would be respectful to the gods to try and recover what I can. I think I need to start with 1/4" mesh and make something like a shaker that archaeologists use. Would love to find one of the contraptions you have Chris.

During the season I use my sifter all the time, have two of them. Most of what I burn is reclaimed from basements. Lots of fines and some dirt when nearIng the end of a barrel. The sifter pulls it right out. The hopper seems to have been sized for a typical coal hod. Fills it just right. About ten turns of the handle and it’s done, the clean stuff is out the other end and into the same hod. I dispense the fines along the edge of the roadbed of my outdoor ride on railroad, very effective we’d control. Ironically, the ‘lid’ fits the old time galvanized ‘ash cans’ and not much else.

When sifting ash for useable coal I find it passes a lot of clinkers. But it goes right through my Chappee anyway. It could care less.

Does anyone else have trouble writing on this particular forum with spell check CONSTANTLY changing the spelling to what they perceive to be correct? Our old time terminology screws it all up I guess.
Don
