I notice that when I turn my coal stove up to a certain setting gas begins to accumulate and rise from the hopper....I assume this is sulfur dioxside?....Anyways the Alsaska that I have has a dial on the side....I think it turns the power venter......should I adujust this knob when gas begins to collect in the hopper?

There should be no gas coming from your stove, period. If you do not have CO detectors I would turn the stove off immediately untill you get some.

Words from the wise. CO is a no-no.

If by 'CO' detector you mean Carbon Monoxide dectector.....I have a brand new one right by the stove. I also have what I think is a sulfur detecor right next to the stove. The sulfur detector went off the other night. The next day I cleaned the stove chimney....which is power vented....and the alarm did not go off again. The 'gas' that I speak of is white looking and collects in the hopper....when I open it.....it comes out a bit......could it be steam?

It sure sounds like steam in the hopper. The next time you see the 'fog' turn up that reostat and see if it gets pulled into the bottom of the hopper.

If you are running the draft blower very low a lot of the time, it would be safer if you hooked up some type of draft meter to make sure you keep a negative draft on the stove.

Is your coal in the hopper dry or damp when it is put in the hopper??
