What insert are you using...
Most don't need additional clearance...
Why do you think you need more clearance...
In a true fireplace the firebrick is semi structural...

Not sure how to post pictures, but I wanted to remove the bottom ones so the insert would sit lower and give me more clearance to the mantel. It will work as is, but I was hoping to get another 2”(story of my life). Didn’t really think about it being structural, but after looking at it some more i can see that they probably are.

if needed a small curved heat shield will work for a projected mantle...
