What kinds of hot air furnaces are available that burn rice coal and oil?
I have a Yukon Polar furnace that burns nut coal and oil and eventually I want to convert to rice coal since it seems to be more available and there is a hopper.

Chuck,
Alaska also makes a real nice coal (rice) fired hot air unit. The Model 140, available in three configurations; 1- single paddle feed 5-85k BTU 2- double paddle feed 5-170k BTU 3- auger feed 5-170k BTU which could also burn pellets(but then the btus drop to 40k). I have the auger feed in my house, and it is wonderful. It also does my domestic hot water in the winter time.
If you need more than 85k btus, then buy the auger feed unit. It is about 50 bucks more, but worth it.

Isn't there a propane/coal dual fuel auto-feed that can start the coal w/ gas?
If there isn't, shouldn't there be?

It's easy to start a fire once you know how, once lit most people keep them running for the season. Just for the purpose of starting the fire something like that would just unessesarily add to the cost of the unit.stockingfull wrote:Isn't there a propane/coal dual fuel auto-feed that can start the coal w/ gas?

I don't have any figures but it's my understanding that the combo units are not very efficient when using the oil. They were designed for coal, it's just a nice convenience for when you will be unable to tend to the furnace for extended periods of time such as if you go on vacation in the winter.
