I installed my exhaust pipe with the male ends going up (go with the flow). I just had my chimneys cleaned and the professional cleaner told me to take it all apart and reverse it.

I really don't want to do that. Whats the point? I can only think that creasote will create a black liquid that will run down the pipe?

I did a search on here for stove pipe and got a million unrelated results.

Mine was installed by a union plumber and he installed it "with the flow"

in other words if exhaust leaving the boiler so male ends of the pipe headed toward the chimney.

I of course didn't question that as it makes perfect sense to me....

I don't think it would make a difference on a coal stove. Wood is a different matter though, the creosote would run on the outside of the pipe.

For a wood stove the pipes go the other way so the creasote will run back in to the stove and not down the out side of the pipes through the joints.

Every coal stove installation I've seen has the males going towards the chimney.Matter of fact the outlet on any coal stove is designed to fit the female end. Professionals especially those outside the NEPA arer are not used to a typical coal stove installation .

For coal it should be male ends toward the chimney. Just the opposite for wood.

Thanks everyone, looks like I am in the clear!

Next time I am cleaning them myself too. I thought he did something special. NOPE. 40 mins cost me 189 bucks. Sounds like a hooker :D

$189 bucks? I'm in the wrong business. Did that include a chimney sweep? You only have to disassemble them and knock the ash out, I could see charging something like that if it was wood and there was real work involved...

^ I had 3 chimneys. Fuel oil, Coal, Wood. My fireplace is a russian fireplace (mason stove) but it only has one clean out port. All he had to do was vaccum it out. He said my coal chimney was perfect and didn't touch it. He also said my fuel oil chimney was perfect and just vacuumed out the port that goes into the wall. The only chimney he sweeped was the wood, he said it was fine and just had dust in it.

He was in and out of here in 45 mins. Billed me 189 bucks. He didn't even do anything, his worker did, he sent him on the roof to sweep the chimney.

Oh well, lesson learned. He inspected everything at least and said everything was great. I am a new first time homeowner so I needed the piece of mind, especially since the previous owner told me he never had the chimneys cleaned and lived here 30 years.

I had a chimney cleaning company here as well when I first bought the place. They charged per flue, but only charged me for 2 instead of all 3. Around $200 in 1990. That was the one and only time.
