Aluminum will last forever assuming it doesn't wear out. That's not a concern unless you're unless you intend on burning a couple hundred thousand ton.

Instead of going through all that work, just build an extension on the top of the hopper. For every 1 inch of height your going to gain about 7-10 lbs of coal. Make sure you place a support under the hopper so the stove doesn't tip.

The reason for my new hopper is not so much to increase capacity, but more to make all the coal fall towards the feed paddles. I find that with my 10-14 hour work days I often come home and the stove is out or almost out, but there's still a lot of coal left in the hopper. The new hopper will have angled sides and back. With the jacket I made the stove is now 45" wide so my hopper will be 45" x 14". The capacity will be about the same.
