Anyone have an idea of what mix of rice to buckwheat to use? Have a ventor and not a chimney, buckwheat too clean.
Thanks,

Keystoker states not to use buck with a direct vent because it will lead to hopper fires. The constant high draft along with the extra air space between the coal in the hopper allows air to enter through the hopper. Air entering through the hopper will always result in a hopper fire since the coal fire will follow the air.

You could likely get away with using buck as long as it's cold but as soon as you had a warm afternoon or warm day where it idled for extended periods, you'd probably get a hopper fire. You can get hopper fires with chimney stoves/boilers too, if the draft gets too high. It's just less likely than with direct vents. The old manuals used to have a warning about using buck with a DV, but the newer manuals just say use anthracite rice only...

i ran about 50/50 mix in my keystoker 90 when it was cranking really cold to prevent clinkers that I was getting with just the rice. I didnt like to run it that hot for extended periods, it wasnt big enough to heat house without a jacket in the basement. didnt have any issues running the mix and I do have a draft gauge and kept an eye on it.
I upgraded to a HYFIRE with a heat jacket. still use the Keystoker to heat the back of the house.
