Having an issue with my stove. It is burning high up the feed ramp. Usually it burns just above the holes on a low setting I usually keep it on. Its in my garage so its usually on one or so. I thought maybe the half moon feeder was not turning well enough and not feeding enough coal. It was making a scratching noise when it ran. Took it all apart and cleaned the bottom of the half moon and the base it sits on. There was a little build up, but not bad. Reassembled and watched it before loading coal back in it. Seemed to turn pretty well. Loaded it back up and ran it on 5 to fill everything up again. Lit it and checked on it later and it is still doing it. The flame is almost at the very top, against the stove body. I also cleaned under the feed ramp and cleaned out all the holes. It seemed to be moving a lot of air out the holes after reassembly. Not sure what is causing this and would appreciate any help.

Sounds like a strongback gasket is bad or your combustion air isn't correct.
What's your draft run at? When's the last time gaskets were replaced?

Not sure which gasket is the strong back one. I have about a season and a half on the stove after replacing all gaskets. Draft usually stays around .5 or so. I did clean all holes in the feed ramp and felt a good amount of air coming from them when I turned it on before I lit it.
Thanks for the reply.

After reading similar posts I feel I need to add a couple more things happening as they may be beneficial to diagnosing this. I am getting a sulfur smell and condensation in my hopper.

Hmmm I had a sulfur smell and bad condensation in the hopper at the end of last season. I replaced all the gaskets and bumped my idle up a bit, been fine this season so far. The gasket between the burner assembly and stove body was shot and the strongback (sits between the grate and back of burner assembly, has a metal strip in it) wasn't to great either.
I have an Alaskan stoker II, very similar.

I am going to replace the gaskets under the hopper and feed ramp. Also clean the holes between the stove insides and the exhaust pipe outlet.Hootyburra wrote: ↑Thu. So I changed all gaskets around the grate and lit it yesterday. So far I haven’t had moisture in the hopper or a sulfur smell. With my controller on one here is a picture of it after running all night. I just don’t remember the fire being that far up the grate last year. Does it look correct?

It does appear to be burning back further than usual but I'm far from an expert
