Alaska Model 140
Been playing around learning the stove for the past couple of
months.
Recently I've had some progress with putting tape over my combustion fan and getting a little more heat out of the stove.
I also calibrated the high and low knobs so that 9 is max.
I'm wondering what I'm missing or, what I'm doing wrong.
I've got a manometer set correctly I think.
Tonight, I have my stove cranked to the Max High, with the low off. I removed the tape from my combustion fan.
It's going to be in the negative temps tonight and I'd like my stove running as best as possible and I just can't figure it out.
Stove is in an unfinished basement. So far the highest temp I've reached down here is 67.
I'm hoping I'm missing something stupid, but I just can't figure it out.

Hi, I don't know much about stoker stoves. However you should disconnect the manometer from the stove and adjust the guage to 0 before you go any further. Make sure the hose is plugged into the correct hole on the top of the manometer. There are two. Also 500 degree stack temp seems very high.
The manometer has been zeroed out, more than a few times. I check it regularly and it's reading correctly.
The 500 degree reading is the surface of the stove about 16 inches above the door.
I think what my problem is, is that I have a gasket that's going bad, and there's some air passing through over top of the coals.
Once spring gets here, I will do a permanent install including plumbing into the current system. I also plan on disassembling, cleaning, and. servicing the unit as well as adding a water coil.
I'm also going to look for a second burner for these polar vortex

A manometer is not set. Move hose to other port so it's easier to read.( on the higher side) Smiley face burn pattern is indicative of coal dragging along sides. When was last time you vacuumed under grates? Made sure air holes in grate are not plugged?
Other than some people saying that you set the manometer to idle fire, While others say full burn, The manometer is absolutely set correctly. It's just your preferential for reading it.
It was vacuumed / holes cleaned last weekend. Just a couple weeks ago I sanded the grate and sides to remove surface rust. I think we got a warm weather day coming up this week, and I'll hit it again. As well as clean it since I have it apart.
Less than a month ago after it had burned out and I was cleaning it, I also reset the hopper, to make sure it was sitting on the gaskets properly. The gasket was coming off a little bit so I hit it with some cement.

I appreciate the help. This forum has been amazing.
I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning:
Alaska model 140 single paddle feed.
I bought it used this fall with three ton of coal. So I don't know what brand or type of coal, other than it's rice coal.
My brother also burns coal, so I'm going to see if he will trade out three bags, so I can run that and see if there's any changes.

Worth a shot. You don't set manometer. You zero a manometer. You SET your barometric damper reading the manometer. I can't remember instructions exactly but you adjust baro with chimney warm and brisk fire. Something like that.

Stokers typically use over fire draft to set the baro. Keystoker calls for -.02 to -.03 draft over fire.
I don't know how Alaska does it, but there is probably a small hole or set screw in one of the doors or door frames. Mine is in my fire door.

I also found the problem with my airflow and got that corrected. The stove went from around 400° Fahrenheit to 550 very quickly. She's now been averaging between 500 and 550 degrees all day.
And since I partook in dry january, I bought me some adult beverages and celebrated. Thanks again to everybody for the help.

Good. Please do explain what you found and how you corrected it so someone searching with similar problems can have that information.lamoore99 wrote: ↑Fri.
