I’m looking to see how everybody cleans out the horizontal chimney from fly ash. Do they shut the stove down? Do they have piping hooked to the vacuum to get around the bend? I just stuck the vacuum through the damper because I was about a quarter of the way, full with fly ash have to come up with a better way

depending on your setup, i put a tee with a cap instead of elbow in at the top so i can open and clean it out, i normally don't shut down, just put the vac hose in and vacuum the best I can and cover it back up. of course when it's idling, not full burn.

Always put in a tee.

Open, use ash vacuum to do rough cleaning...wait for season is over to do full cleaning.

If no tee..then option of shutting stove down to clean is appropriate. Use opportunity to add tee 8-)

Here's what I just did. I wanted to post it new, but couldn't. It's probably not advisable for a pipe through a finished area, but an old dirt basement, it worked for me. I have an 18' run from my furnace to my chimney, so that's already a challenge. First, as others mentioned, a Tee at the furnace. I put my controller on low idle, then I shopvaced as far as I could reach, then I opened my chimney cleanout door, and used an electric leaf blower in the Tee, and gently tapped on the bottom of my pipe, the entire length, with a rubber hammer handle. Fine flyash dust did escape at joints, so I'm going to work on sealing them better. The whole process took maybe 10mins,without shutting down.
