Hello All!

Recently got this Alaska Kodiak Stoker 1 from 1985 up and running. Given to me by a friend, my understanding is that has not been running for more than 20 years. Plugged it in and everything worked great!

I have a question with what appears to be a timer. Based on the settings displayed when no heat is being called for by the thermostat, it will turn on for four minutes, then off for four minutes. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how I should set this and on which numbers?

Stay warm everyone 🙂

Use that as a starting point and adjust from there. The settings will vary depending on the draft you have with your chimney and the quality of coal you are using. It's also personal preference sometimes too. Some people prefer to set there idle a bit higher to still give off some heat between heat calls in the colder months. If you are just trying to keep it lit in between heat calls then adjusting to maintain about a 1 inch strip burning across your grate at idle is about standard. Also be sure to keep the area under your grate free of ash build up and keep your combustion fan blades clean. If dirty enough it can mess with your stoves ability and efficiency pretty badly.

I had a 1986 alaska kodiak stoker and it had no control box like that. It had a rheostat for fan and coal feed carpet speed. Matthaus came over to visit me one time and he took the fan blade off the stoker motor and added a broan 50 cfm bathroom fan to the bottom of the stoker. the 50 cfm fan runs 24/7 and then we installed a coal trol to control the coal feed. I could burn as little as an ounce of coal an hour or as much as 120 pounds a day.

Thank you both for the feedback.

Indeed I will tinker based on my preferences. My Keystoker i have been running about 6 years, usually takes me a few tons to get it just right each year.
