Long story short we purchased and had installed a Keystoker 90,000 btu direct vent last December. Worked fantastic all season. Fast forward to this spring and my alcoholic husband assaulted me resulting in his arrest and subsequent stay away order of protection. It has left me here by myself attempting to get this stove started.
He did not clean at the end of last season. I followed the instructions in the manual and cleaned. When I lit the stove the fan tripped after about 10 minutes and I did notice steam or smoke coming from the hopper. Is there something I missed?
I have to get this running as I simply can not afford to heat my home with oil as after his arrest he took every penny we had leaving me with nothing.
Hoping someone can help as my local dealer can’t get here until mid December and wants to charge me $275 to come out.

Ouch. Anyhow, was the coal wet? Wet coal is bad in a hopper. Does that unit have a control panel? Did you clean the direct vent? Those are known for being problematic if not cleaned regularly.

Thank you so much for replying.
The coal is dry, the bin is in the garage.
I cleaned out the inside of the stove including the small hole inside stove as well as larger opening at bottom leading to the exhaust, cleaned out the hopper, cleaned all the fan blades. Did everything the manual says to clean, I’m stumped

You made sure exhaust path is clear? No birds or bees nests in outside opening? Maybe burn couple sheets of paper in ash bucket and turn it on and check outside.

I figured it out!
I should have cleaned the pipe leading to the outside last, I cleaned it first. Some debris ended up back in there which kept tripping the fan as it was now clogged.
It’s up and running like a champ! I’ll be warm and toasty all winter now
