The price of rice coal has doubled at Tractor supply! Last year when I purchased a ton at a time they gave me a discount for buying in bulk. This year they won’t give a discount and price has doubled!
The minors didn’t get a raise, the truck driver that delivered to store didn’t get a raise. The manager at Tractor Supply didn’t get a raise. I know gas prices went up but they didn’t double!!!!
Local independent dealer told me “price just went up”! He said he hates it????
A minor that works in Reading Pa said his mine is still selling at 200$ ton!!!! Lehigh and Reading are selling at 380$ .
This is my third year burning coal , I love the heat but I’m going to have to go back to wood .

Seems the big operators are selling into the world market are the ones with high prices .Find a small local operator/breaker .Most of those are up just a little. Hopefully by next season more competent people will be running the show.

I saw the light back in early May and bought 7 ton from TSC at last years prices along with a small damaged ton pallet for $100 from them. So I am glad after seeing what's gone down since then.
It was a PIA to do as I usually do it with TSC layaway with discount every summer then pick it up in the fall. But again so glad now. Saved a ton $$$. Now hopefully Ford will fix a leak in my 6.7 powerstroke at 90k miles.

Might be worth calling Penn Keystone to get a price.

$575 here in Illinois. I’m pretty much burning wood pellets these days. I have 1 ton of coal I’ll use on single digit days. I suspect the suppliers around here are going to have a lot of coal on hand. I can’t see anyone buying it at that price. Now it’s driving up the price of wood. A face cord is around $175. Wood pellets is $275. I’ll definitely be insulating to r-30 in walls and ceilings. I need to get this house down to being reasonably easy to heat. Sure wish I had done it 20 years ago. Oh well hindsight……LETS GO BRANDON!!!!!!

More important than the insulation value is air sealing. This is normally the biggest source of heat loss in a home. Start by air sealing around the foundation at the sill and rim joist. Next go to the attic and seal any wire penetrations or other areas with obvious air leaks into the attic (like a set of pull-down stairs). If you have really leaky windows, those should be next on the list.

When you are ready to add insulation, start with the attic as that has the most bang for the buck. If you can insulate the rim joist with spray foam, do it as that will also accomplish the air sealing already mentioned.

New windows 10 or so years ago. Good there. They were Pellas and made a very noticeable improvement. Thanks for the tips. I think the floor joists will need it too. I have a basement and get alot of air through the floor. Wood floors no carpet and intend to keep it that way. 20 degree drop from my shoulders to my feet. Anyway, I digress. I didn’t mean to turn this into a insulating thread 😝

Cant over state the importance of insulation and air sealing no matter what your heat source.
Iv been doing a little every year and my coal use has dropped from over 7 ton to just around 4 ton a year over the last 15 yrs ina 3000sf 100+yr old house. Quite the drop. A house is a big chimney.Cold air comes in the bottom and warm goes out the top.

Just talked with my guy here in south central PA and he can give me a ton for around 270. That's not bad considering that I paid 230 at the beginning of the summer.
