Has anyone had issues getting there home insured with the insurance company knowing you have a coal stove here in ny there not very popular and the insurance company doesn’t quit understand them like a wood or pellet stove they claim it needs to be professionally installed and inspected every 3 years my worse fear is something happening when I’m at work which typically is 18 hour days by the time I leave and come home. And worried if something happened insurance would not cover the house.

No problem at all. I have Erie Insurance. Not only are they competitive, they took good care of us when we had a wind damage claim 10 years ago.

Erie just asked me to send a picture of the unit to be sure I didn't have gasoline cans or piles of drier lint stacked near by...they were so easy and workable!

Whoops, sorry I just saw you said NY and I'm in PA. Sorry don't know how to delete this post.

They want a permit and Fire Marshall's cert for stoves because insurance companies consider them to be "supplemental heating sources." Boilers and furnaces they don't want anything because they are "standard heating sources."

Thanks I actually called them the other day they were about $50 more than I pay now for home and auto combined but if they are good to deal with I may switch. They did not ask any questions only if I have a swimming pool should I make sure they know I have a coal stove to be covered?

It is easy to focus on the price of the insurance, but it is far more important that they actually take care of you when something goes wrong. Tell them you have a coal stove if you are worried about it, and ask if they can sharpen their pencil.
