Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Keystoker A-250

Post by drb_1984 » Tue. Oct. 12, 2021 9:14 pm

Hello:

I live in the Catskills in a big, old, uninsulated house. Oil cost me in excess of $1k a month, so I ordered a Keystoker A250.

Problem is that now the plumber who said he could do it is now saying mid-winter. No good to me.

Is it feasible for someone like me with decent mechanical aptitude to assemble and install it myself?

Or, does anybody know anybody who would be willing to install it in the very near future? We would pay.

Thanks in advance!

Daniel

There have been plenty of people that have installed their own coal furnaces. I think with the right guidance you could do it, but time is running short.

Have you called Keystoker? They might be able to put you in touch with an installer.

Actually DOING the work isn't bad with some plumbing and soldering skills and basic carpentry/fab skills.

Designing and laying out the system and components on the other hand are the biggest challenge. Expansion tank in the right place of the right size, automatic air bleeder valves, water valves and flanges, pumps, zone valves, controls, etc.

The good news is folks here love to look at designs and give tips to help others design reliable and efficient systems.

Another consideration would be pricing and availability of components. Your plumber likely buys at their supplier and often has more options than Lowes or Home Depot kind of places.

Having trouble getting contractors who are available? Welcome to our brave new world ;)

Haha, thanks! It is a hot air furnace with existing ductwork to tie into so it should not be too crazy with expansion tanks and a water system to tie into.

On Rob R.'s suggestion, I called Keystoker the other day. Just got off the phone with Keystoker not 1 hr ago. It looks like I am going to just pay them to come up to NY. I have to say that I really, really like doing business with them.

Totally agree with your comment about the world nowadays . . . since COVID-19, I sometimes feel like capitalism is broken and now we are living in the Soviet Union with bread lines and all.

Hot air? Oh yeah, LOL.

Sounds like you reached the right people to come get you setup properly. Enjoy the heat!
