My parents got a Harmon magnum used this yr to try coal..

Their complaint is the fire goes out when its on low after a few hrs and it seems the fire walks itself back past where the air grates are.. Anyone else ever have this issue on a Harmon..

I personally dont like harmons design so I have never messed with one..

Another key point is they dident hook the thermostat up so it is burning all the time and not cycling one and off ..i told them my reading dosent have that feature so it shouldn't matter but maby I misspoke..

Thanks for the help guys

Not enough coal being fed...bump it up more.
Make very small adjustments and always wait an hour to see fire settle in to new change..

a little more feed or if it has an idle timer, turn it it one notch. Like mentioned above, make small adjustments.

My Harmon has on and off timers on the side. To run it low I usually set the on time to 4-6 minutes and the off to 12-14 minutes. For the feed rate I set it all the way in and back it off 1\2 turn. Each turn of the feed handle moves the fire 1".

But like McGiever said, you just have to play with the settings and be patient to find the right ones for you

Since you mention they got it used there are a lot of things to check to see why it isn't feeding enough coal.

Fork width, timer settings, feeder block movement nut setting, fines impeding movement, grate condition, grates seated properly, feed motor condition & operation, to name a few.

Titleist, I realize this is an old post; however, I wanted to thank you for the recent PM on the draft/odor issue on the Super Magnum Stoker. Your guidance was very helpful. The board won't allow me to respond to you by PM. You may have that turned off, but I didn't want you to believe I didn't appreciate your time and your thoughtful response.

Huck.
