Love my 503...
The newer ones post 2006 have a built in MPD to better control the draft...
Easily keeps my 1900 sq/ft two story Cape at 72 all winter long...
Burn just over 1/2 ton per month in the winter...
About 3 ton for the season...

I have a 503 insert and it does a good job for me.
I usually only tend it once a day, unless we are in sub zero weather then it's twice a day.
I do wish that it had the thermostatic air flapper on it.

I have a 503 and agree with Cape and Lou. I don't think it's as efficient as a free standing stove simply because you don't have as much radiant surface area exposed. When cold you really need the blower fans running to scrub and distribute the hot air off the box and around the room. Having said that I really love my Hitzer and that's the trade off I make to have it fit nicely into my home situation.

I put 3" rock wool batts on the sides and back of my 503...
This season...
Don't need it below...
Going to put it on top for next year...
Outside wall fireplace...
Seems to keep more heat in the house...
