Hello,
I have a Harman Magnum Verti-Flow burning rice coal. The unit is about 25 years old. The fire in sitting toward the front of the fire box and the back is all ashes. I am getting almost no heat from the small fire. There is also an ash layer over the top of the hot coals.
I emptied the hopper and the pusher bar looks like it's functioning normally.
Does anyone know what would cause this?

It would be a good idea to post some pics of what's going on. With that the wizards can work the wands.

The fire was initially burning in the front 3" of the fire box. I tried to move the hot coals toward the back of the fire box which ended up putting the fire out.
The picture is after the coals were moved back. They are still glowing in the middle of the firebox and pusher bar seemed to just push an ash layer on top.

Can have no fire where there is no air...clean out collected fines under the grates and be sure every hole is not plugged shut and then the fire will move back.
If the back of the grates really is all ashes it sounds like it isn't pushing new coal onto the grates. In addition to cleaning out under the grates and using a 1/8" drill bit to clean out the grate holes check to make sure the pusher block is moving about 3 dots on the pointer gauge that is on the side of the stoker housing. If its not moving enough there are a few things to check like the spread of the fork that drives the pusher block and if the block is being blocked by fines built up around it.
It would also be a good time to clean the fan blades on the combustion blower and distribution blower if you haven't done that this year. Make sure the combustion blower is seated all the way into its collar, mine has a tendency to vibrate its way out if i don't use a wedge to lock it in place.

Cleaned out under the grates and cleared all the holes, everything is working great. Thanks for the help.
The slide you pull to clear out the area under the grates has been stuck for years. Any ideas on how to unstick it?
