This topic has been beat around a bit.... what is the deal with Hilcoils? Are they around any more or what has taken their place? Anybody on here making them?

Heil-coils work. There for replacing damaged threads. Auto part stores carry them. You can buy the coils individually. However it would be suggested to buy it in kit form. Comes with the correct size drill bit, several coils and an installation tool and instructions.

Like said, some autoparts stores carry them, some you'd have to order the kit,.... or more the coils if you need more than come in the kit. Basically can't be installed without the tools that come in the kits, and each thread size needs it's own tools, so it gets expensive.

I use Helicoils a lot in my restoration business, so it's worth the investment.

Any machine shop supply like Grangers, MSC, and McMaster-Carr carry the full range of sizes.

There are some competition thread repair inserts, that are not wire coils like the Helicoils. Being thicker than coils they need to have more metal drilled out and threaded. https://www.mcmaster.com/thread-repair-inserts

I haven't heard guys talking about them for several years. That is probably not a good sign.

I'm an auto mechanic ... when someone mentions Heli-coil, auto guys don't think of hot water coils. Not even for coal stoves... even on a coal stove forum. Its all good though - we all gave these guys laughs..

i was looking into installing one on my reading coal stove.
post from this forum made me decide against it.
the coils even tho they are stainless steel, corrode badly inside the stove.
people were getting pinholes in the coils after a few seasons.
they supposedly have a lifetime warranty but one person here had trouble with the warranty.
these are probably better suited for a wood stove unless you clean the outside of the coil often and remove it in the off season.

There are a number of things you can do to make the coils last longer. I used two in my hand fed furnace for 8 years and they are still in good shape...

A bad application of a good product (hilkoil) doesn't mean the product was inferior.

My experience with their coils is positive. 1st coil was purchased in a kit from Alaska Stoves, Bloomsburg in 1999. lasted 15 years and replaced in 2014 with a coil directly from Hilkoil. Coil was used every season and cleaned of fly ash regularly DURING USE. At the end of the season it is removed, scrubbed clean and kept dry till next season.
I learned this after the first season seeing how it became pitted from the corrosive ash buildup and have been cleaning them regularly since. I also flip them over as my coil sits directly above the fire.
