Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Reading Lehigh
Coal Size/Type: Rice

Post by Wfrench » Thu. Dec. 19, 2019 5:09 am

Hey,
I need help increasing my heat output in my Reading Lehigh stove. It is slated at 85000 BTUs and able to heat 1800-2500 square feet. It does not seem to be putting out much heat currently. I have had it since 2012. Help on how I should set the coaltrol digital or what I need to do to increase heat output.

Reading stokers are hard to adjust even when w/o a Coaltrol.
For the Coaltrol as per Coaltrol rep there needs to be a separate combustion air blower not the single common motor as is stock.
So, do you have that?
Has the area below grates been recently cleaned and gaskets replaced?
Has the grate holes been all cleaned out?
Has the squirrel cage fan had blades cleaned?
Has the motor(s) been cleaned and oiled?
Is stove pipe and chimney all inspected to be clean of accumulated fly ash?
Does this have a barometric damper in the stove pipe?

is the stove in your basement?
when have you cleaned it last?
it looks to me like you are feeding too much coal. lots of unburnt coal in the ash. turn the feed screw back.
check the coal trol manual for factory reading stoker settings.

my reading stove is in the basement and runs wide open whenever the outside temps are below 25 degrees.

Without the 2 separate motors, 1 for feeder and 1 for combustion air a Coaltrol will not have full functioning control.

You probably know Coaltrol manual can address this Reading to operate even if limited to the single motor.
Sorry, I have no knowledge of Coaltrol other than already stated...hopefully someone who does will respond.

I will clean out grate holes, I have cleaned everything else recently. How do I turn back the feed screw? I do have a barometric damper as well. The stove is in a large living room.

what works for me.
When its less than 20 at nite min is 5 max is always 35. as it gets colder i increase the min from 5 to as high as 9. This give me more even heat with not much overide temps.
Is your coal wet? Are you burning rice coal and not buckwheat? Buckwheat is to thick to burn completly. another thing is you may have too much combustion air. Try covering the intake on the combustion fan. Start about 1/4 of the way shut as this blows the heat out the chimney. Hope this helps, Stant

I had my min set to 35 and my max 45. I changed it to 5 and 35. I have the temp set at 85, thinking it would pump more heat? Am I wrong with that?

The min is related to the max, the higher the max is the min will feed less coal. 85 is way too high, You need to get all the coal burning not just some. The easy way to clean under the grate is remove the combustion blower and put a vacuum sweeper inside the hole. If the grate holes are blocked you will not get enough air. Also could your combustion fan be going south. Its 7 years old.

Good luck, Stant

lots of good suggestions -> will add one to the mix:

what is your draught?

if your draught is too high, then you may be sucking a lot of heat out the stack...

How is your red nut that control max. Heat ajusted? This is the long screw that goes from the motor, to control the movement of the feeder in the back. The longer the movement of the feeder =more heat. Do not adjust it more than 2 turns at the time.
