Does the size of the duct work determine how noisy a system is? I mean to hear the blower and the noise of of moving air.

Most definitely. The slower the air velocity the quiter it will be.

So if I really want to quiet things down I would need to increase the supply side

Many systems are really short on the return duct both in size and quantity . Return is just as important

...and corners...

They can help cancel noise as heard from the vents. Assuming that is the noise not the expansion and banging of the ductwork itself?

Start at page 62 for sound attenuation and causes, etc.

As for the OP's noise reduction question, There can also be the concideration to reducing the blower cfm and keep the duct size as is....yes hotter air, but same amount of coal is still burnt...

As for increasing any duct, donot ignore proper return sizing as was mention...it may be that existing return size is inadequate now and supply is just fine...
BTW: Return is to be 15-20% more sq. in. opening area at the registers than the supply is.
