hi russ,as for starting fire there are many ways.starter mouse available on ebay but not required matchlight charcoal brokek into small pieces wrapp in newspaper.stick paper into a small pile of coal on stoker unit,i start with 1 pound coffee can full on stoker, light paper when fire starts burning well turn on stoker.then sit back and enjoy the heat.heating your home will depend on sq.ft.living space you should have sufficient heat with your unit for 1500 sq.ft.+ or - lots of info here keep reading.
