What should I use for a screen?

I acquired a bunch of nice, dry buckwheat coal for under $100 a ton.

I started running it through my VF3000, and it worked fine for a bit. I believe a piece of oversized debris caused things to bind up and bend the forks. I have seen the odd rock in this stuff.

What should I use for a screen? buckwheat #1 is supposed to be no larger than 9/16. Would you use 3/4" expanded metal or 1" (square) hardware cloth to screen it?

One time I had quite a bit of nut with to many fines in it. I used 1/2" hardware cloth in a frame that I set at an angle so it would flow down it with a bit of shaking.
The 1/2" seemed to take out anything smaller then a 1/4",
I would be tempted to try the 1"hardware cloth, if to much big stuff goes thru then go to 3/4".

I had some wire fence with maybe 1 1/2 inc holes, built a little wooden frame and just doubled up the fencing. It would not stop pea or maybe even a larger from going through but will catch anything big.

Jersey buy half inch Chicken Wire .Its 24 inches wide an hardware store usually will cut to length .I made a 24 by 30 inch frame of 2 by 4s this will fit over a wheelbarrel .Staple or nail mesh to frame .Screen out small stuff which falls through screen a traps the larger coal to prevent damaging your stove .No mess as small stuff falls into wheelbarrell .jack
