The manual shows a diagram of what over-fired would look like and warns against possible damage to the unit. The temperature dropped really far today so I bumped up the feed rate. It's at 2 dots, which isn't the max it can push. Coal is burning very close to the edge of the grates, which somewhat looks like the over fired diagram. But maybe its when its actually spilling off still burning which I don't think is happening...

most stokers can run full burn for a long time without overfiring, there is only so much grate area for the coal and can only burn whats on the grate. As long as you are not pushing hot coals off the grate, you should be good. usually keep 1" or less ash at the end for full burn.

Mine is running full bore all day, high of 0 and currently -7 and still dropping.

Hand Fired ones you can put a lot more coal in and get it burning probablya lot hotter than stokers.

My dad runs a Vermont Castings Defiant and burns a 50/50 mix of nut and stove. It’s amazing how hot he gets that puppy.
625-700deg temps on the sides isn’t uncommon.
My K90 has been 1/4turn out from max since 9pm last night. It’s currently -4deg with 15mph winds gusting to 30mph. And I’m on top of a hill. House is 71. No complaints here.

when i lived at the garage in newtown we had a pot belly stove by the garage door for some time. it was made by the mt penn stove company in mt penn in the 1800's. that beast used to glow in the dark when it got going well.

the homeowner that had my reading allegheny was overfiring it in a pole barn....the paint was burned off the front of the stove and the front was warped slightly. i bought it from the new homeowner who said "i would keep it if it burned pellets...i don't want coal" got it for 300 bucks...my gain!
