hi guys, i was looking at youtube the other day for stoker videos and saw one that i want to see if others have tried?
I have a mag stoker running 12yrs today its 23 degrees the stoker is 400 degrees at side upstairs is 62 - old 3 story house and that seems to be the best i xan do when temps are low 20's in low 30's i can get house to abot 66, 69 which is comfortable to me. in any case there is a video where a guy cuts down firewood to i think about 10-12" width and lays a piece over his stoker grate and of course hes burning coal\wood at same time. i tried a few pieces and stove temps rose to about 550 and the upstairs temps rose a bit but the firebox was a flame throwing culdren so i only did it a few times wasnt sure if the high erratic flames would\could breaker stoker glass but it didnt seems to affect the coal after the wood burned to ash except there was a layer of wood ash mixed in with coal ash. Anyone else doing this?

I saw the same video. I was going to ask about it also. I have an Alaska Channing in my garage that I plan on running on its slowest setting. That is except when I'm going to be in the garage. Figured if it works I'd add a chunk of wood instead of turning up the feed rate. So your question will definitely help a few people.

Throwing apiece or two of wood into a coal fire makes more air space for the coal (think bit) and the wood gassifies.

Sounds like a similar process

Is your 400* side temp purposely that low or is that the most you can get out of yours?

I routinely get 600* on the sides of my mag stoker.

if i bump up the feed\timer i can get 800 but wasting alot of coal that way, currently pushing 3.5 dots although not sure how accurate that is, 6min on 15 off

What is your setup like? I do know i need to clean stove pipes if stove goes out will do it this winter yet or eos. I have an 8ft hz sloped run to wall thimble and under belly is cool enough to place hand leave it. the top of the run is too hot unless i run an aux fan over it for a white then mid way to thimble i can touch stove pipe but about 4fy from stove still too hot

I am pushing 2.5 dots, the timer is set for 3 min on and 15 min off, the combustion fan is about 1/2 blocked with the cover

The 'stat is upstairs and set at 70*.

When running flat out on a 'stat call after about 20 min. the side temps will hit 600* and the temp will maintain within a degree of the 'stat set point. I'm not sure what the sides measure when only running off the timer and no 'stat calls, I'd guess about 300*. Can't really measure that right now with the 'stat calling for heat.

My major concern would be if the wood is put too far back, it may force flames against the back wall where the new coal enters. I would be concerned with the flames being forced against the stove opening where the hopper meets the stoker grate, which in normal opeartion is not exposed to flame just heat.

Had a handfire keystoker stove (sold it with the “cabin”) the new owner burned wood in it exclusively ! Problem was he closed the door and overfired the stove overheated the flue pipes and set the roof on fire !!!!! I don’t think he really understood the stove !! Be careful is my best advice

I find insulating the top of the stove works the best.
