This is

a picture I stole of the type of feeder control on my recently purchased alaska model 140.

My current question is, the knobs have set screws to connect to the round shaft, with no way of knowing where 1 should be.
Should the knob point to 1 when turned all the way counter clockwise? Or should they rotate past 1?

Oh, and can i lift out the grate from inside the stove?

I am finding that documentation on this furnace is very sparse.

Thank you Don.

Knobs, doesn't matter where...your choice.

Model 140 is under fed like a EFM stoker...so , yes, grates lift from inside.
BTW: Grates sell on ebay, single or set.

EDIT: Turns out there are 3 variant of the 1 Model Number 140.
Single Paddle, double paddle and the Auger under-fed.

I'll add this PDF if in case it may be of some help to someone

Ok, after 2 tries it appear that 3.5 kept it running all night at idle using almost no coal, so I will move the knobs to 1 so future operators can follow the instructions in the manual.

Now waiting on amazon and lowes to deliver the 12 inch round duct to connect it to the propane furnace plenum.
The most expensive part is the Ideal-Air 736988 Back Draft Damper, 12 inch, so the propane furnace doesn't just blow air through the alaska when the alaska is off. I considered making a tin flap, but hopefully the damper will make installation simpler.

Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood

Not likely. There are 3 versions of the 140, under fed pot (EFM style), single paddle feed, and dual paddle feed. The paddle feed models are much more common than the under fed model.

So, the question is, which one is it?

12" round, for a 170,000 BTU furnace? sounds kind of small.

What are you using on the cold air return side?

This is a half moon paddle feeder that pushes the coal pretty much straight onto the grate.
This one is a single feeder, not the double, so it is rated 85k btu.
The convection motor is 1650 cfm, the chart said that 12 inch round would handle more that the blower could deliver when turned all the way up. I would think the blower cfm would define the minimum duct size, no matter the btu.

The confusion on the variation on the Alaska model 140 is doing the operator no favor when searching for detailed info. I understand the model 140 is the basic steel box, but they could at least suffix the model when they change control and feed options.

Edit: for the cold air return
there is already a 12x12 hole above the stove that can draw air directly from the kitchen, and is also at the end of one of the cold air returns for the propain furnace.
For this season I am planning on letting the alaska suck the air out of the 10' by 12' basement room that the stove is setting in.
