I am looking at getting my newly cracked glass (been fine for 10 years) in the stove door replaced. Does anyone know of anything I can use to temporarily cover the door opening, so that I can continue to use the stove?

A piece of stainless would do the trick if you can get a hold of some. Years ago we fixed a woodburner with a piece when the glass cracked.

No need for stainless, any steel should do the trick. It just may not look as good.

Thanks! I am going to need to use it for about a week. What gauge should i be looking at- keeping the stove on low, but higher than idle, setting. Also, what would I use to seal the sheet metal?

and just to be clear, i am talking about using the steel in place of the door temporarily, not inserting the steel into the slots where the glass currently is.

No, I would avoid that if possible.

What is wrong with the current door?...
If just the glass is cracked replace glass with steel...

If the cracked piece is stable I would use it as is.

There is nothing wrong with the door. I was taking the door to a guy, who was going to soak the bolts to get them off and then replace the glass. Since that time, I have rethought this and am going to do this myself after I get the new glass.

On using the cracked piece, I am not sure what caused it, and wasn't sure what I need to do. There are 3 cracks. 1 is 2" in length, and the other 2 are about 1/8". It appears to just be on the surface- I can't see it on the backside. Would you use the cracked piece until the offseason? Will it get worse- is it heat doing this or is it only impact that would cause this? I was thinking if I needed to deal with it this season, I should deal with it now, rather than wait until Jan-Feb if needed

Could ya upload a few pics? Cracks in the glass are unattractive, but if the window isn't gonna fall apart then they are harmless, generally speaking. Do the cracks extend from one side of the glass to the other?

The cracks are just in the upper left corner and the most left crack may extend all of the way to the edge- I can't tell with certainty.

Use the door till your new glass comes in.
